What Split keeps, and who sees it
Split is a small tool Vancity Connect runs for its trips. It keeps only what's needed to split costs, and nothing is sold or shared for advertising.
What's stored
- Trips: the name, dates, home currency, and the names people go by on the trip.
- Expenses and payments: what they were for, amounts, currencies, exchange rates, who paid, how they were split, notes, and a history of changes with the name that made them.
- e-Transfer emails, only if the organizer adds one, so others on the trip can pay that person back. Only the organizer can add or change them.
- Organizer accounts: a name and a passphrase stored as a salted hash (we can't read it), plus a sign-in cookie on each device.
Who can see it
Everyone with a trip's link can see that trip: names, expenses, balances and any e-Transfer emails. Treat the link like a group chat invite. Trip pages are hidden from search engines. The organizer link and the API key give organizer rights, so keep those private.
On your phone
Your phone remembers which name you picked and which trips you opened, in this browser only. There are no tracking or advertising cookies.
Other services
Split runs on Cloudflare. To suggest an exchange rate, it asks the Frankfurter service (European Central Bank rates) for two currency codes; nothing about you is sent. Money never moves through Split: e-Transfers happen in your own bank app.
Deleting things
Deleted expenses can be restored for as long as the trip exists. The organizer can delete a whole trip, which removes everything in it for good. To have something removed, ask your trip's organizer or contact Vancity Connect.
